How helping others helps you
When I tell someone that I am
a volunteer at Plovdiv 2019, they usually look at me surprised then smile politely
and ask me: ‘But why? What’s in it for
you? ’. At the beginning I used to answer that the true meaning of being a
volunteer is in gaining nothing. That volunteers are people who by their choice
take part in different activities and only want to help, if there is need. Then
I started thinking about my answer and I realized that I was not right. At
least, not entirely. Volunteers really don’t gain any money. Spiritually and
morally, however, they can be considered the richest people in the world. So,
what’s in it for me? Let me tell you:
When you help other people you
also help yourself. Unintentionally, of course, because every volunteer becomes
one, firstly, because they want to be helpful. With time, however, you start
discovering that volunteering is beneficial to you, too and in way that you
haven’t expected.
First – it’s healthy.
I am not making this up. According to a survey that I once read, when you stop thinking about your own problems and focus on someone other than yourself, your stress levels start to decrease, your immune system is strengthened and your overall sense of life satisfaction increases. This is because helping someone else interrupts tension-producing patterns and replaces it with a sense of purpose and positive emotions.

Second – it helps you boost
your confidence.
By volunteering you feel more and more complete with every finished project. This way you become more confident, can easily face difficult situations in life and achieve your further purposes.

Third – gain a whole new
perspective.
Volunteering changes the way you see the world. While working you meet a lot of different people from different places and they are all unique. Their experiences and the way they see the world can be entirely different from yours but interacting with them you learn that diversity is strength, difference is a teacher. Fear difference and you learn nothing.

Forth – you learn to be more
responsible.
A volunteer’s work demands responsibility. When in a certain situation an unexpected problem turns up (and that inevitably happens to all volunteers) you have to know how to react. The first time this happens to you, you panic but then, with time, you get used to it and notice that the solutions come more easily to mind. In other words, you’ve become more responsible.

Fifth – you are having fun.
Volunteering is something you shouldn’t take lightly. As a matter of fact, volunteering is a responsible work and it needs be treated with the utmost respect. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun! Thanks to volunteering you meet new people, try new things and visit new places. While doing so, you can definitely enjoy yourself and create memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life!

Yes, you are entirely right: making a difference in the lives of others and contibuting to a cause outside yourself contributes much more to happiness than focusing on your own private life. Volunteering may be one of the ways to do this. So, don't give up and have fun with others whilst doing useful things!
