| What did I do to contribute?

We’ve all witnessed the flow of hatred around the opening weekend in Plovdiv, which is now officially the European Capital of Culture. I admit that initially there was resentment in me as well and I wanted to confront everybody who dared to spoil this incredible event with his ugly words. However, this feeling was quickly replaced by another feeling which was even worse: disappointment. This is not a rebuttal nor rebuke. I will express my brief revelation here because I think that the world doesn’t need more hatred!
Plovdiv was elected European Capital of Culture on September 5th, 2014. Here the mathematicians can correct me but this is around 1576 days before the beginning of 2019, or simply said: 5 years ago. During this period of time, thousands of people put their hearts and souls into something worthwhile that’s meaningful to all Bulgarians. One part of them are the volunteers who work tirelessly and with undiminished energy. Despite the difficulties, the mistrust and the everyday sloppiness, they’re no surrenders and still believe in what they do. They not only devote their time but also often sacrifice their sleep and encounter every attack with a smile. Simply because they know that everything they are doing is worth it. They are positive and keep their cheerful spirit even in the most unpleasant moments. But, please, don’t get mad about their unstoppable optimism. Don’t we all have the need to believe in something beautiful?
Or do we prefer our mundane everyday life which is full of despair, pain and disappointment?
Yes, we’re used to do everything choosing the easiest way possible. However, things aren’t done with just grumbling. We’re constantly complaining about the society when in fact… it is us and the change starts within.
For many, the Opening Ceremony consisted of countless free scarves and clothes but for me, it was just… magic. We had and we still have a chance to dream, share, feel, learn, change and grow. It can sound stupid or even childish but I truly believe that we all together (#together) can walk the path to a better future.
There will always be something better and we will always have something to learn, but if we focus on the bad, we risk missing all the things that make us smile.
Dear people, I will only ask you this. Whenever you read, write, or hear something bad about the event, to remember all those without whom this event wouldn’t have been possible and 2019 would’ve been just another boring year. So, before you judge, ask yourselves the question:

Interesting blog! I agree: when critical of the events in Plovdiv, first of all ask, what you contribute yourself. However, in our wish to be positive, we risk to become defensive and thus misinterpret criticism as hatred. There has been well-founded criticism surrounding Plovdiv2019 in the press. Let's not dismiss this as negative, but take it seriously and of course ask, as Nadezhda writes: what can I do to solve problems?
